Description
Oral-Z ® is a preparation of Zinc Sulfate. Zinc is an essential trace element which is involved in many enzyme systems and present in all tissues of the body. It is vital for the synthesis of protein, DNA and also required for the action of hormones. It supports many physical processes, like: Physical growth, Mental growth, immune function, Digestion, Reproduction, Wound healing, Kidney function, Breathing, Diabetes control, Vision, Taste, Smell.

Indications
Oral-Z ® is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of Zinc deficiency states:
  • Diarrhoea
  • Severe growth retardation
  • Recurrent respiratory tract infections
  • Ichemia
  • Dental disturbances
  • Alopecia
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Night blindness
  • Deformed bone formation
  • Impaired immunological response
  • Acrodermatitis enteropathica
  • Parakeratotic skin lesion
  • Effective & delayed wound healing
  • Infertility

Dosage and administration
Children under 10kg: 1 teaspoonful or ½ tablet (If the children can swallow) 2 times daily or as directed by the physician.
Children (10-30kg): 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls 1-3 times daily or as directed by the physician.
Adults & Children over 30kg: 2 tablets or 4 teaspoonfuls 1-3 times daily or as directed by the physician.

Zinc supplements are most effective if they are taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hour after a meal. However, if Zinc supplements cause stomach upset, they may be taken with a meal.

Side effects
Zinc sulfate may cause abdominal pain, Dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastric irritation, gastritis, irritability, headache, lethargy.

Contraindications
Zinc sulfate is contra-indicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Zinc Sulfate or to any ingredient of the preparation.

Drug interactions
Zinc sulfate may inhibit the absorption of concurrently administered Tetracyclines and Fluoroquinolones; when both are being given an interval of at least 3 hours. Concurrent administration with Penicillin might decrease the effect of Penicillamine.

Overdose
Zinc Sulfate is corrosive in overdosage. Symptoms are corrosion and inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth and stomach; ulceration of the stomach followed by perforation may occur. Gastric lavage and emesis should be avoided. Demulcents such as milk should be given. Chelating agents such as Sodium Edetate may be useful.

Warnings
Accumulation of Zinc may occur in case of renal failure.

Presentation
Oral-Z ® Tablet: Round, pinkish colored tablet. Each tablet contains Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate USP equivalent to 20mg elemental Zinc.
Oral-Z ® Syrup: Light pink colored, orange and peppermint flavored syrup. Each 5ml contains Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate USP equivalent to 10mg elemental Zinc.
