Denicol^®

Denicol^® is an ophthalmic preparation of Dexamethasone and Chloramphenicol. Dexamethasone is one of the most potent corticosteroids. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action. Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum anti-biotic which acts against both Gram Positve and Gram Negative bacteria and other microorganisms. This combination yields excellent results in inflammation of the anterior uvea (iritis, iridocyclitis)

- Inflammatory eye infections
- Acute purulent conjunctivities; fresh inflammation of the superficial and deeper corneal layers and corneal ulceration
- Keratitis disciformis and the more deep-seated forms of post-herpatic keratitis
- Allergic conjunctivities, allergic blepharitis
- Acute and chronic iritis and iridocyclitis

Denicol^® one or two drops into the conjuctival sac every hour during the day and every two hours during the night as initial therapy. When a favorable response in observed reduce the dose to one drop every 4 hours.
Later, further reduction of dosage to one drop 3 or 4 times daily may sufficient to control the symptoms.

There are no adequate and well controlled studies on pregnant women. So, steriod ophthalmic preparations should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential riks to the fetus. It is not known whether the steroids preparations are excreted in human milk or not. So, nursing mothers should consult with the physician before taking the preparation.

Prolonged use of steroid may result in posterior sub-capsular cataract formation which delays healing of wounds. In this case intra ocular pressure monitoring is needed. Prolonged use of antibiotics may occasionally results in overgrowth of non­susceptible organisms including fungi. if infections occur during treatment of Denicol®, it should be discontinued and appropriate measure should be taken.

A slight burning sensation may occur. After several weeks of administration to predisposed patients there may be reversible increase or intraocular pressure. Systemic adverse reaction may also occur after long-term topical administration of corticosteroids in children. Other side effects include cataract and corneal softening.

Denicol® is contraindicated in fresh herpes simplex cornealis, tubercular process involving the conjunctiva, the cornea and the anterior uvae.

It is wise to avoid other ophthalmic preparations administered concomitantly with Denicol^® Dexamethasone interacts with atropine and other eye preparations used for glaucoma.

Denicol^® is an isotonic solution that is sterile until the bottle is opened. It contains Dexamethasone 0.1% as Sodium Phosphate BP and Chloramphenicol 0.5% BP.
